The chronic skill and labour shortage continues to challenge our business community. Inability to secure the talent required to maintain and grow our local businesses can have a devastating impact on the economic vitality of Oxford. This situation has no easy solutions and requires innovative strategies to ensure our community thrives. In response, CES with our partners established a comprehensive Labour Force Attraction and Retention strategy that includes such things as:
- Immigration and skilled newcomer attraction that match the requirements of the Business Community and enriches diversity, creativity and innovation.
- Youth engagement and retention, since young people are an invaluable resource that represents the workforce of the future.
- Supporting job seekers through training and upskilling to ensure they have the requisite skills in demand with our employers.
This approach also integrates existing tools and resources including: The Work In Oxford platform that allows employers to profile their unique business attributes to differentiate themselves from other employers in this extremely competitive market.
It also exposes the myriad of opportunities that exist in our community to potential employees provincially, nationally and globally and encourages them to consider Oxford as a place to work, live and play.
It supports students as they make informed career decisions for their future enhanced by the innovative “Behind Our Industries” video series, exposes them to diverse co-op opportunities, eases school to work transition and also provides exposure to volunteerism to complete their required community service hours and nurture empathetic and empowered citizens.
The utilization of this platform also is integral to gathering and analyzing data that can help inform service delivery models and approaches for all stakeholders.
We also provide the comprehensive suite of Employment Ontario Programs that provides training, subsidies and support to meet the needs of local businesses, but also connect and put people on a pathway to successfully integrate into the world of work.
Working together, our strategy forms a seamless integrated and holistic model that drives positive impact.
The Career Expo is an integral ongoing component of that strategy.
