Malcolm Excavating -A Family Succession Story

Malcolm Excavating in Burgessville has had a storied history. Andrew Malcolm’s father, George W. Malcolm, originally started the company over 80 years ago. A part time gig, George began with one backhoe, which he used to put in field tile, do drainage work, and put septic beds in for his customers. He did this for 50 years, before handing the reins over to his son Andrew. Andrew has grown the company to now include over 100 pieces of equipment and 40 employees. Malcolm Excavating is very much a team effort. “Our success and achievements come from the dedication and hard work of each of our employees past, present and also in the future,” according to Andrew.

Satisfied clients and fabulous word of mouth has helped Malcolm Excavating grow into the company that it is today. Along with cities and municipalities, Malcolm Excavating currently serves over 3,000 farmers.

A true family affair, Malcolm Excavating has three Malcolms taking part in the business. “As a family run business we always want to do that little bit extra to make sure we provide our customers with the highest level of service.”

Andrew, along with two of his children, Nathan and Andrea, run various aspects of the business. Andrew’s father continued to work for him 10 years after handing over the reins to Andrew, as Andrew will likely do when he is ready to hand over the reins.

Nathan, with his degree in Civil Engineering, takes care of anything ground down. He has worked for other companies prior to Malcolm Excavating, and this experience has helped to bring new direction to the company.

Andrea, Andrew’s eldest child, takes care of payroll, invoicing, and accounts payable. Another child, Trevor, is a firefighter.

A feather in Malcolm Excavating’s cap is commitment to quality, excellence, and safety. Their staff are COR certified and trained. A Certificate of Recognition (COR) is a nationally recognized accreditation that verifies a company has a fully implemented and effective health and safety management system, letting people know that their safety standards are higher than the Standard. This is exceptionally important to Malcolm Excavating, both for the benefit of their clients and their staff.

Something else that is important to Malcolm Excavating is their connection to their community. Andrew is involved in the Board of Directors for the Norwich Township Chamber of Commerce, as well as those of Woodstock and Tillsonburg.

Malcolm Excavating has sponsored golf tournaments, and other activities, gaining great satisfaction from offering these events. Not only do they offer an opportunity to the community, they also bring about connections with their community.

These connections, along with positive word of mouth, form a very positive core to the company. It has been said that Malcolm Excavating is a strong pillar in their community and a family succession story. They take great pride in their support for the community.
